LIVING POEM SOCIETY
From a poem I
published in Canticle Magazine with a companion essay, the Living Poem Society
was born. I enjoyed sharing my thoughts about the meaning and structure
of “Love Poem for Two Voices” and hearing that others appreciated the help
understanding it more deeply. I knew it would be a rich experience to
give and be given this sort of window into the poems of others, and to make new
friends in the process. Our name is taken from Ephesians 2:10, in which we
are described as God’s workmanship (‘poema’ in
Greek). I do see a person as a beautiful, carefully designed and balanced
work of art conveying many layers of meaning and reconciling apparent
paradox. I also see that the poem, like the human person, is a place in
which experience is given dimension, and into which other persons can be
welcomed to share that experience. The small group of ‘living poems’ who
meet with me at Signs of Life Christian Book Store, in Lawrence, Kansas, has
been woven together in a special way through the poems we have shared and
opened up to one another for deeper inspection. Anyone is welcome to join
us (with or without a poem of your own to share) on the third Monday of each
month, from 7:30 – 9 p.m.
